EMMA: An insight into complexities of human nature

DSC06339‘Seldom,very seldom,does complete truth belong to any human disclosure;

seldom can it happen that something is not a little disguised or a little mistaken.’

Emma Woodhouse, a “handsome, clever, and rich” young lady who enjoys meddling in others’ lives-until she makes a mess of her own is complex and witty.  This book by the famous novelist Jane Austen is considered one of her flawless works, next to ‘ PRIDE AND PREJUDICE’.

This book takes us to the quaint little countryside of Highbury where our title character Emma lives with her father Mr.Henry Woodhouse. Emma is a 21 year old spoiled, headstrong and self satisfied girl who is blind to the dangers of meddling in the lives of others; and her imagination and perception often lead her astray. However she is lovable because she is so imperfect. Being well settled in life Emma isn’t dependent on any mans fortune , instead , she plays cupid to the people around her. But when she ignores the warnings of her good friend Mr. Knightley; who is the only person able to find faults in her behaviour, and attempts to arrange a suitable match for her protegee Harriet Smith, her carefully laid plans soon unravel and have consequences that she never expected!!

The beginning is definitely slow, but I was determined to give this book a chance. The plot gradually picks up, becoming more involved and complex as it goes along. Although I will admit, by the end I was reading much quicker because I wanted to know the ending.

The few flaws I personally think in the novel are perhaps in its pacing and the less humour content but that aside this is a very well developed novel. I give it a 3.5/5. Emma  is definitely an amazing book and it is a must if you love reading. For now, I just can’t wait to try Pride And Prejudice!
